Dallas Home to Several National Companies

Did you know that Dallas is the birthplace of a range of nationally recognized brands? According to a recent article in the Grand Prairie Bubble Life, there are thirteen household names that were founded in Dallas, Texas.

Dallas is home to several national companies, both old and new. When you’re in Dallas next, be sure to check out the following historic restaurants, shops and landmarks.

True Southern Cooking at National Restaurants

For authentic Southern-style cooking, look no further than the Black-Eyed Pea. This quaint, family friendly-eatery was founded by Gene Street, “a Dallas resident and restauranteur,” says the Grand Prairie Bubble Life. “He opened the first location in Oak Lawn, and it still remains open to this day.”

In his quest to create the perfect Texas-style barbecue sauce, Dickey’s Barbecue owner Travis Dickey founded the restaurant in Dallas in 1967. According to the Bubble Life piece, “Travis’ sons, Roland T.D. continued their father’s tradition” by sharing their fathers’ finger-linking barbecue recipes and expanding the restaurant chain to other regions of North Texas.

High-End Retail Giants Founded in Dallas

Dallas is also home to several national apparel companies, including Fossil, a trendy name brand that was founded by fashion designer Tom Kartsotis, a “Texas A&M University dropout and Dallas resident.”

After successfully selling 1,500 Hong Kong-made watches in the US, Kartotis launched a line of watches that “targeted younger upper and middle class consumers.” Sales went through the roof, and Fossil has since expanded its product line to include glasses, clothing and accessories.

As one of the nation’s most historic and luxurious department stores, the first Neiman Marcus location opened in Dallas on September 10, 1907, at Elm and Murphy Streets. Founded by Herbert Marcus, Sr., his sister Carrie Marcus Nieman and her husband A.L. Nieman, the first store burnt down in 1913.  It was rebuilt at Main and Ervay, and nearly 60 years later in 1965, the family opens its second store at Northpark Mall.
